15 Memorable Ways to Celebrate Your Birthday While Social Distancing

Do you have a birthday coming up, but not sure how to celebrate? With Covid-19 looming, many businesses are shut down and your options for fun can feel a little limited, especially on your birthday. But believe it or not, there are still a TON of ways you can celebrate your birthday so that it is memorable this year – even while social distancing!

Here are 15 ways you can celebrate and enjoy your birthday while social distancing.

1. Go on a Hike

If you are able, going on a hike is an awesome birthday activity. It’s a great way to get out in nature, take in some fresh air, and get a little workout in to start off your new year right!

2. Go to a drive-in movie theater

If you are lucky enough to have a drive-in movie theater close by, you have got to check it out! See which movies are playing, pick your favorite, and then take your truck or car to the outdoor theater where you can sip on your own beverages and indulge in your favorite movie theater treats!

3. Have a picnic at your favorite park

Pack some fruit and sandwiches (or even cheese and wine!) and head out to one of your city’s most beautiful parks for the most perfect, relaxing afternoon.

4. Grab your favorite cocktail to-go!

Your favorite restaurant may be closed for dine-in but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t take-out your favorite cocktail! Check to see which restaurants in your city are offering alcohol to-go so that you can be sure to get your favorite cocktail on your birthday.

5. Download Netflix Party and watch your latest Netflix binge with your friends

Have you heard of Netflix Party? It’s a browser extension that once installed, allows you to create a group chat so that you and your friends can chat while watching your favorite Netflix show.

6. Cook your favorite dinner at home

…Or have a friend/partner cook it for you 😉 Head to the grocery store, get all your favorite ingredients (and your drink of choice!) and have a birthday meal that you’ll never forget.

7. Set up an ice cream sundae bar

When was the last time you got to eat all the dessert and toppings your heart desired? After dinner (or whenever, it’s your birthday, after all!) set up a dessert bar with a bunch of ice cream and a ton of toppings to have an awesome sundae perfectly curated by you!

8. Go camping

When was the last time you went camping? This is a great activity to do (especially with a friend or loved one) that’ll get you outdoors on your birthday. Don’t forget the ingredients for the s’mores!

9. Have a socially-distanced tailgate

Pick a meet-up spot (maybe even your driveway if you have one!) and then get a few friends involved. Have everyone bring a dish or drinks or cups/napkins/plates so that you all can come together and collectively have a fun, delicious, socially-distanced tailgate!

10. Host a Zoom Party with family and friends!

If you’re far from home but still want to be sure that you can see your family and friends on your birthday, try a Zoom Party! Zoom is a free video-conferencing platform that you can use to “see” your family and friends from afar via video. Or, try House Party to play some really fun games while video-chatting with your best friends! House Party is similar to Zoom in that they both offer video conferencing, but House Party has some of the most fun virtual games that anyone can play. Both Zoom and House Party are free.

11. Donate to your favorite charity

Want to give back on your birthday? Donate to your favorite charity, or encourage your friends to donate to a charity of your choice on behalf of your birthday. Facebook, in fact, has a really cool feature where you can do this!

12. Go to the beach

Do you live close to the beach? Take a day trip (or get an Airbnb for a night or two!) and make a trip to your favorite beach for a birthday that involves lots of sunshine and plenty of relaxation.

13. Give blood

If you are able and are so-inclined, you can give blood during Covid-19. According to The Wall Street Journal, “Since March, when businesses and schools closed due to the Covid-19 outbreak, tens of thousands of blood drives have been canceled, and American Red Cross officials don’t expect a return to normal for a year or more.” That means blood is needed more than ever right now!

14. Take a mini road trip

Is there somewhere close by that you’ve always wanted to go, but never really felt like you had the time? Well now’s your chance. Take a mini road trip on your birthday to go somewhere different, and create new memories on your special day.

15. Build a fort and have a movie marathon

Remember when you used to do this as a kid? Well it’s never too late 🙂 Pick a few of your favorite movies, and then build a fort with blankets and pillows for a movie-going experience on your birthday that you are sure to enjoy.
